The start-up instructions for the Casio Waveceptor Solar Atomic watch (WV430DJ-1) were the most confusing I have ever experienced. Being a retired engineer, I thought setting up this watch to operate would be a snap but after playing around with it for over an hour I gave up and returned the item. I already have a solar watch (Citizen Eco-Drive) and wanted to try one that automatically adjusted the time the way my cell phone does. I wouldn't recommend this watch to anyone I wanted to keep as a friend.
My husband is enthralled with this watch. It DID take him 4 hours to program it because it does tricks to the MAXX! One suggestion: if you purchase this rascal, do yourself a favor and go on-line and download a full-sized manual on regular printer paper. He said looking at that itty-bitty manual for sooooo much information was way too difficult. The price is excellent and Casio has always made quality products.
In my life I owned many watches.I am watch dependent guy.Once happened to drop a watch for repair and in two hours I bought a new one because I couldn't stay with out watch.So I need watch.I owned many brand of watches.This one satisfied me the most.First because give the exactly time.Second of all I have no business to change the battery.It is nice looking(can be used at church and at work).
Definitely I will buy one the same in case I need one.So I highly recommend this watch to anybody who is like me.
Depending on how your Waveceptor is put together will determine if your watch is water resistant; My Waveceptor is not!!!
On the outside this watch is all metal, but that is where it ends. The four screws holding the stainless back on are anchored into a plastic casing on inside the watch. When my watch was made one of the screws must have been stripped allowing the back to let in moisture. I didn't send the watch in to get "fixed" and decided to dry the watch out myself. (Note: Had I sent the watch in for repair this may have been a three star review.) Well I've had to dry my watch out three times and can not wear it hiking as the sweat from my body will fog up the watch crystal.
Speaking of the crystal. I can understand why it is not made out of glass as it has to let through as much light as possible to charge the battery.
All in all this is a great timepiece. I just would not recommend you wear it near water or during any sports activities.

Basically I liked the look of the watch and it worked well. However the band was very thin and the case had a cheap look. Of course the price on the watch reflected that. I would recommend it for an everyday watch.
Very pleased with the watch's style and looks. It takes a lot of reading and experimenting to use all the functions. The instruction booklet is large in content and very small in print......hard to read. Overall I am very pleased with the watch.
Great watch, but only for US and Japan. It would be greater if it also received West Euro signals.
After looking for some time to replace a dress style Pulsar analog/digital watch, I bought this watch via Amazon.com. It has all the features (e.g., day-date, alarm, stop-watch, world time zone capability, etc.) one would expect in a modern electronic wrist watch. For the gadget addicted, it incorporates an automatic time setting capability via radio transmission from the atomic clock in Ft. Collins, Colorado (or a site in Japan). But, it's the design appearance and style that make this watch stand out.
The watch body is large enough to readily accommodate the required displays without being cumbersome and garish along the lines of so many such watches found today. The face includes iridescent hands and 5-minute markers which are hard to find these days. The chronometer style second ring is neatly located just under the bezel. The face is a unique combination of finely etched dark grey (which can look slightly bluish under some lighting conditions) and hidden solar recharging panel. The activation buttons are low profile and sleekly located in the usual quarter positions on the outer edge of the body. And, they don't consist of huge wheels, levers, cranks and other devices intended to impress the wearer/viewer with sheer obtrusive bulk. The band is a great combination of moderately sized rectangular links in brushed stainless steel flowing into a lightly grained steel extension area around the face. Very classy.
Okay, there are two downside issues with this watch. First, the instruction manual suffers from the usual written-in-Japan/China syndrome. Related information details are spread throughout the manual making it difficult to understand and accomplish certain basic tasks. The default abbreviation for the day of the week was in Japanese and I was able to change it to English as much by accident as by logic. Second, the band links give the appearance of being easy to remove/add for sizing. Not so. This link style is a relatively new configuration by Casio and there is no documentation in the manual to help guide you through the process. I did find two references online with instructions, but I haven't been able to relate them to my band design. Thus, the band is still oversized for my dainty wrist. I expect a jeweler will be able to figure it out.
All in all, this is a great watch with excellent features, layout, style and price. I assume it will hold up over time (sorry about that), thus reinforcing my early satisfaction.
Perfect watch but can be tricky to setup. No need to think about wearing it (like my automatic Rolex), or the battery running out or if it the correct time. Great watch!
I had one with a gold dial face WVA430A for 3 years and I have 3 complains.
1. Get one with crystal dial face if Casio has one. Otherwise, cover it up with a clear packaging tape to keep it from scratching and change the tape when it gets old.
2. the metal band (a two tone silver with gold stripes) has 2 non-stainless-steel parts (just adjacent to the watch body) which looked silvery metal for the first year but degraded to grey color now. It doesn't look so pretty.
It is a good band but requires a little skill to remove the extra links initially.
3. The synchronizing moment didn't work when I travelled in Europe or South America.
Otherwise, I would say it is a great watch for the money, worry free with its accuracy or battery charge.

I've had this watch for about a month now and it looks, feels, and works great. Excellent price for such a nice watch. Would recommend.
I am pleased with my purchase - Metal band, easy to read dial, good build quality, and has not varied from the time that I first set it to agree with my atomic clock. The band is large enough to encircle the wrist of most big people. I have to wait a decade to determine if the claim of a 10 year battery life is true. A good value for those that only interested in reading the correct time.
(Note: This review is for the above watch's predecessor. I've owned the watch for 12 years and it still runs, so I thought I'd contribute my two cents based upon my experience.)
The watch I own is exactly the same as this one except its watchband links are slightly different and the date window is at 3 rather than 4. Other than that, it's the exact same watch. I bought it 12 years ago and it still runs perfectly (its accuracy is about -1 minute per month). I've dropped it multiple times, accidentally sent it through the washing machine several times, scraped it, knocked it around, etc. and it still looks good. The crystal is very scratch-resistant. The band is comfortable and the clasp still holds firmly. Considering I purchased it so long ago and it was probably on the store shelf a while, I'm amazed the battery hasn't died.
Although many would undoubtedly love this watch, I particularly recommend it for those who work with their hands such as landscapers, mechanics, plumbers, etc. It's handsome enough to look professional for clients and rugged enough to really take a beating. Also, it's thin enough that it lays on the wrist without getting in the way of what you're doing and it's not heavy.
If there's a better watch value out there, I'm not aware of it. Highly recommended.
Well i bought this watch for my boyfriend for an early Christmas present, so he really hasn't got to use it yet. I just coundn't pass it up because it was on sale and there was no shipping and handeling fees for that day only. My boyfriend is sure to love it because he's not really into all that high-tech stuff. So if you're looking for a simple, but expensive looking watch this is the watch for you!!!
For its cost, this watch surely is a excellent buy. Other features that I like are the 10 year battery and 100m water resistance. In India, once a watch is opened, the water resistance is gone, as it is almost never re-sealed properly - which is where the 10 yr. battery is very important. The footprint is not very large (like those from Fossil), so it looks good on an average man's wrist. I surely recommend it for a casual watch.

This is an excellent watch and at this price...totally amazing..It says battery life is 10 years..very light and decent watch..worth buying it..I sent it to India for my father and he loved it.
Looks are great.With a battery life of 10 yrs, that the manufacturer's claim, it is a good value for the money paid.
In the first palce, I wanted a reliable watch like Casio, low priced, yet shows good taste, for my every day use. This watch is in fact far more than I expected, based on it low price tag. It is really v. well built with elegantly styled metal band and dark blue dial. It is designed in a classic way that would stay in style as long as its battery goes (10 Y).
I beleive this watch will stay with me for some time, till I just get sick of it, as it looks like it can really hold up for years of use.
I totally recommend this watch for anyone who wants somthing decent in value and looks for, a v.decent price.

I have had this watch for about 14+ years. Naturally, the battery has been replaced a few times.
Since the band is not expansion, I found a one that looks very nice on the watch. Check Wal-Mart for bands. Sometimes they have them and other times they don't.
No, it doesn't have a light. If it did you would need to replace the battery much more often so that is not a feature I look for.
Both Energizer and Maxell make battery #365 that is a perfect replacement for the 1116 that is VERY hard to find anymore. Other brands may also have this #365.
My wrist is rather small so this watch is an ideal sized digital for me.
I have the exact opposite issue with the clasp that the below reviewer has -- my clasp snaps shut and stays shut! I have to get a screwdriver to pry it open to remove it because my fingernails are just not strong enough, and I have strong nails. I've been wearing it off-and-on for three months -- maybe it will be easier to open with the passage of time.
Also, I don't understand why there would be an impression that the band was expansion-type; the description states that there is a clasp and it is the fold-over type. But maybe they recently changed the description.
Otherwise, I agree completely with A. Rogers' review: this is a great watch. With all the timer features, it is indispensible for a mom. Compared to all the other watches out there with all these timer features, this one is NOT clunky-looking at all. I would call it sleek, in fact. Most watches with these features are big, thick, sporty-Ironman-looking watches, but not this one. I wear the version with the plastic band for everyday, and I wear this metallic one for dressier occasions.
The only drawback to this watch (aside from the tight clasp which will hopefully loosen a bit) is the fact that it doesn't have a light. I don't know the technology; maybe adding a light would make it thick and clunky since most lighted watches are clunky-looking.
As stated, this is a hard-working little watch for everyday use, and it lasts a long time although you won't be passing it along to your grandkids. Buy this watch -- for all the features and the great price, you won't be disappointed.
This is a very functional watch. The instant countdown timer on the watch can be set by just pressing a button on the watch. For 1 mins, press once, 5 mins press twice, etc etc. Theres not too many watch on the market with this type of function. The isntant countdown timer is quick and handy which you can set while in motion - for example when jogging or walking and not having to stop to set the timer. This feature is the only reason I've purchased this watch. The watch itself is very plain looking, and in the past I've owned 5 of these watches over the past 15 years. This is the first watch of this type I've purchased with metal band. I can't really wear the same watch which comes with the rubber type of watch band for a long period of time since it makes my skin itch but I do not have problem with the metal band. This metal watch band is ridiculously long. My wrist is an average size. The metal watch band is not one which can be easily shorten by yourself. Moving the catch on one side of the band can easily shorten one side of the watch band, but to shorten the other side by trying to remove the metal link is puzzeling. I've emailed Casio tech support for instruction but the instruction they emailed back to me seem to apply to other different type of watch bands which was not helpful. Because the metal link on the watch band can not be easily remove like other watch bands, I give them 4 stars rating instead of 5 stars. It'l be a trip for me to a watch shop and then I have to spend $10 to $15 extra just to shorten the watch band. The watch itself is a very good simple watch. I just wished it came with instruction on shortening the watch band and wished it had a built in light within it.
The watch lives up to it's reputation of easy setting alarm. I agree the clasp is weak and comes undone. Would be nice to have multiple alarms but the easy reset keeps me on time for meetings.
I am a homeschooling mother of six and grandmother or 4. The countdown timer and alarm on this watch is what keeps bringing me back. I now have one each in black, gold, and stainless steel. I hope they will make a red one and my set will be complete!
I have had about 5 versions of this same watch over the last 12 or so years. I LOVE the countdown timer feature for everything from baking to napping to walking to getting out the door. I know it won't last long if it is true to form, but I will always buy a new one if I can. This is far more attractive than the ones I have bought at retail outlets which had vinyl bands and all-black faces. I don't understand the people who say the band clasp doesn't work well. Works fine for me. At the price, three years of use is a good buy.
This is a great watch at a great price. I'm on my third one in 20 years. True it doesn't last forever, but what do you want at this price?
I love the easy-to-use digital features, especially the countdown timer. I use it all the time for cooking or time-outs for the kids, or to remind myself that I really need to leave in 5 minutes!
Last time my hubby changed the battery he messed up the water-proof gasket so now I need a new one.
I agree with others that the included watchband isn't the greatest. That's why I only gave 4 stars. Long ago I bought a stretch band and now just swap it out.
Casio, please never stop making this watch. But consider changing the band to a stretch one. That would make this watch truly perfect.
The product arrived rapidly and was what we ordered. However, the watch band has never stayed clasped. We've taken it to two watch shops and said "we don't work on Casios." We said it was just the band and they turned up their nose. Obviously, we won't be shopping at those shops again. Too much hassle and expense to return this item considering the cost, so we're looking to replace the band already--which will cost more than the watch.
Why Amazon didn't point out that they have the exact same watch listed under another description for $5 less I have no idea. It makes an otherwise fine purchase leave you feeling ripped off.
Love this watch. It's hard to find a non-sport watch with a digital display, not to mention one with an adjustable strap. The strap might be a challenge to adjust if you're not familiar with the type, but the clasp is sturdy - it's never fallen off once. The only con is that it doesn't have a light-up display.

I like an analog and digital watch as I can catch the approximate time at a glance without having to read it and also find the date, day of the week and digital time useful in specific situations. Following the instructions exactly, I was unable to adjust the Day and year. This is necessary to get the correct date and for alarm functions.
Sent the unit back.
This is an excellent watch. The watch feels solid but the band is extremely light weight(may be a plus for some). I purchased it because I needed a watch with a timer. The only complaint I have with the watch is the display cannot be seen under the analog hands so I have hard time seeing the remaining time on the timer.
