Casio Men's G-Shock Solar Atomic Watch #GW700A-1V

Product Description

The perfect training partner for your active sporting lifestyle, this casio G-Shock men's digital sport watch (model GW700A-1V) offers a black resin case that's accented by a silver top ring and light digital gray display as well as a black resin strap. It's also solar-powered and wirelessly receives atomic time updates. It offers a 1/100-second stopwatch with a 60-minute measuring capacity and a time recorder with up to 30 records, It also features four independent daily alarms (with one snooze alarm), world time from 30 cities, and an autocalendar (to the year 2039). And because it's solar-powered--charging in either sunlight or indoor light--you'll never have to deal with changing the battery. Other features include a scratch-resistant mineral crystal, AfterGlow LED electro-luminescent backlight, and water resistance to 200 meters (660 feet)--suitable for recreational scuba diving.

This radio-controlled watch receives a time calibration signal transmitted from Fort Collins, Colorado, and signal reception is possible within a radius of about 2,000 miles from the Fort Collins transmitter. You can choose to automatically receive this signal four times a day, or manually update the watch to the atomic clock.

Customer Buzz
This is a basically good watch, but be sure to save your receipt. Mine is out of warrenty anyway, but the stopwatch function button has cracked in half and the repair charge estimate from Casio is $50. The positives stated by others are legit. But you have to wonder about "G-Shock" durability or at least the basic design. I have no idea how it broke, just that at some point the button broke in two and then fell off! Not too useful since as a runner I use the stopwatch function almost daily. There may be better model choices as I think the concept is still reasonable.

I bought this watch around a year and a half ago. After about a year the battery would not hold a charge all day. By evening the watch blanked out and stayed that way until given several hours of bright light or sun. The back light started coming on by itself as well when the watch was moved. So the watch is good until it stops working.

It's great to be able to buy a super-accurate watch at an affordable price without the illustrious name(s) of Rolex or Omega attached to it.

I like this watch, but it's not perfect. The tough solar and atomic functions work great. Although it has 5 alarms (4 and a snooze alarm), it doesn't have a countdown alarm.

My previous solar-powered G-shock only lasted 6 years before the battery died. Is that the 'lifetime' of the product, as the tough-solar claims? It was not easy to find a replacement battery for that older watch, and I've heard that water resistance often fails after opening the watch up to replace the battery. You're supposed to change out the rubber seals inside every few years too, but that doesn't appear easy or plausible. It's not like there's anyplace online where you could buy them, for example.

For a G-shock this watch is actually fairly small, but compared to most watches it is indeed bulky. It's smaller than my last watch so I like that.

The backlight on this watch is fantastic. It also grabs an atomic signal several times during the night instead of once, making it much more reliable than previous versions.

I bought this G-Shock to replace my (still running!) 15 year old G-Shock watch. While the old unit still runs, I found that the protective rubber that encases the electronics of the watch was starting to fall apart, so the watch is essentially exposed now. It still looks like it could take a beating, but there are exposed metal rivets that keep on snagging on things. Those rivets tend to get caught in your sleeves and will start to tear the fabric over repeated wearings, so I finally gave in, and bought this new model.
Of course the new model is just as G-Shock tough as my old unit, and I'd expect no less. But in the world of electronics, 15 years is a long time, and this new watch eclipses the old one with it's new features.
First, the solar charging is awesome. You can put it out in the sun for about 10 minutes, and that charge is long enough to last a week. Keep in mind when you first get it, you'll probably need to charge it for a bit longer though, probably 45 minutes to an hour.
Even better, this thing synchronizes with the atomic clock in Colorado (forgot the name, the main amazon product page has it though) so it's super accurate. The synchronization is the reason that you have to keep this unit fully charged, though. To preserve battery life, once the battery reaches 50% capacity or less, it will no longer attempt to synch. With my old watch, I always knew that it the time wasn't 100% accurate, and I took the time it indicated with a grain of salt. With this guy, when I look at the time, I know that it's right to within millisconds.
There are a lot of neat other features that this watch has that the old one didn't have as well. For instance, you can set the backlight to automatically light up, depending on the angle of your wrist, without having to press a button. More gimmicky than necessary, but it's fun to show off to friends.
All in all, for the price of the purchase, the watch is well worth it, especially considering that I expect it to last me at least as long as my old G-Shock watch!

I'm buying 3 more, one for each of my boys. After getting this watch I stopped wearing my Rolex... It just wasn't accurate enough. Put this watch on, forget about it, and you will always have the exact time....What could be better?

I have an inexpensive Casio watch that is 18yrs. old.It still has the original battery. This is the top of the line to me.G Shock is simply the best. I am 64yrs. old and this watch will outlast me.If you are looking for an accurate, unbreakable and watch that you don't worry about, this is the one.Glad i bought it

Forget the complaints about the size and the reliability. It is very reliable and I like it much better than the Citizen Eco-Drive watch I bought a few months prior. The display is very easy to read and has a number of features that I find useful. I traditionally buy analog watches but decided to try a digital watch. So far I am very pleased. The battery life has beeen fine but I am not one to turn the light on every 5 seconds so that is probably why I have not had any trouble. I highly recommend this watch for those who want an attractive, durable watch.

I've only had this watch for a few weeks, so I can't really evaluate the battery life, which is my biggest concern. But so far, this watch is great. The display is easy to read, and (most of) the functions are easy to figure out (especially if you've had a g-shock before). I love the the watch's ability to receive a signal that sets the time automatically. The alarm and stopwatch functions are pretty typical, but I've got no complaints about them. I like the light button, which is different from the g-shock I had 15 years ago. I'm not so sure about the time recorder function, but can't really offer an opinion because I haven't spent any time playing around with it yet. Over the long term, I am skeptical about the solar-charged battery, but Casio seems to claim that battery charge will not be an issue for anyone other than permanent cave-dwellers. This is a pretty big watch (although it does not seem terribly heavy), so be prepared to have a lot of plastic and metal sitting on top of your wrist. I would never pay the $125 (or so) retail price for this watch, but for the $50 "sale" price I am very happy with this watch.

After some research (including reading these reviews) I decided to replace my Timex expedition after I had to replace the battery for about the 5th time (OK, I've had it for a while). Wanted solar, the Atomic setting function was a plus, but I wasn't sure how well it would work in northern New England. Got it on Amazon and then 2 weeks later they dropped the price $17 - but they graciously refunded me the difference so I was impressed not only with the watch, but how Amazon handled my transaction - after the fact.

Pro: Solid, well built, accurate - yes, it does sync with the Colorado Springs signal if I leave it in the window as the instructions describe. It came fully charged and I've left it in the sun a few times since and the battery meter hasn't budged. Has more features than I'll use - Haven't thought of a great use of the time recording function yet. Auto backlight is cool and handy if you don't have an extra hand to push the light button.

Con: It is large and a bit heavy, but as one reviewer said, you do get used to it after a couple of days. Wish the backlight would stay on just a bit longer - I know it's to save the battery, but I'd gladly charge it more often to keep the light on an extra second or two.
